How to Choose Airport Waiting Chairs: Beam Mounting, Armrests and Durability

Airport seating has one of the hardest lives in commercial furniture. It runs 24 hours a day, serves a throughput of tens of thousands of passengers a day, and is cleaned constantly. Specifying the wrong unit shows up as sagging seats, peeling beams and broken armrests within two or three years - well before the depreciation period ends. Here is what to check.

1. Beam-Mounted or Freestanding?

Beam-mounted row chairs fix several seats to one steel, stainless steel or aluminum beam. They keep a perfectly straight row, allow dense layout planning, and only require floor anchors at the legs - typically every 3 to 4 seats. This is the standard for terminal hold rooms.

Freestanding chairs can be repositioned and combined more freely, which suits lounges and premium areas where layout changes often. They carry a higher risk of being moved out of alignment by cleaning crews and passengers.

For a fixed terminal layout, beam-mounted units almost always deliver better durability and lower install cost.

2. Armrests and Dividers: Function, Not Decoration

  • Armrests help older and less mobile passengers stand up - a genuine accessibility benefit, and in many jurisdictions a requirement.
  • Dividing armrests between seats prevent the "seat hogging" that causes disputes in crowded hold rooms and subtly increase perceived capacity.
  • Perforated or full-width armrests affect cleanability: solid, closed-profile arms wipe down faster.

3. Durability Specs That Actually Matter

  • PU seat shell: ask for density and skin thickness. Thin skins crack where the seat curves.
  • Coating adhesion: request a cross-hatch adhesion test report for powder-coated beams.
  • Weld quality: legs and beam brackets should be fully welded and dressed, not spot-welded.
  • Load test: a seat static load rating in the range of 150-200 kg gives headroom for impact loading.
  • Spare parts: confirm you can reorder seat shells, armrests and legs individually.

4. Cleanability and Hygiene

Integral-skin PU with closed, non-absorbent surfaces is the practical choice: no fabric to trap dust, no seams to collect debris. Specify that the seat can be cleaned with alcohol-based and chlorine-based disinfectants without discolouration - this is an easy claim to test on a sample.

5. Comfort Details Passengers Notice

  • Seat pan depth and lumbar angle - sloping seats discourage lying down but reduce comfort for long waits.
  • Seat-to-seat pitch: 550-600 mm is comfortable for a mixed passenger profile.
  • Seat height around 420-450 mm suits the majority of adults.
